"Through running and an immersion into a dynamic, non-judgmental, supportive environment, individuals are empowered to recognize and set about realizing their unique aspirations, happiness and worth." - Every Step Counts Mission Statement

Victoria, BC has long been recognised as the Canadian runner’s Mecca. So when the Victoria Foundation heard of Back on My Feet, a Philadelphia based program that was using running as a tool to empower individuals stuck in challenging, debilitating circumstances, it seemed only natural to adapt the concept to fit our local community.

Every Step Counts - Support Group

Sandra Richardson, Executive Director of the Victoria Foundation and an avid runner, contacted Rob Reid, Victoria’s preeminent marathon runner and running activist. He was on the Victoria Foundation’s doorstep within minutes, ready to lend his expertise to the community.

The Victoria Foundation sourced funding for a pilot project to explore this concept, and one of their contactors, Sharon Bearpark, drew up a proposed program outline.

Every Step Counts - Support Group

In January 2009, Gillie Easdon was hired to design, develop, run, and recruit for Every Step Counts. She spent a month researching similar programs and making contact with as many local organizations as possible (see friends and sponsors).

With the assistance of the Resources, Education, Employment and Support network (REES), and a very dedicated team of volunteers, the resulting program has gained quite a bit of traction in the Victoria community. Every Step Counts is housed at the REES network at The Victoria Cool Aid Society. Individuals experiencing challenges with addiction, mental health, poverty, homelessness, and other such barriers have trusted and felt safe here for over thirty years. The Victoria Foundation's long history of credibility acts to complement and empowers Every Step Count's innovative mission of community wellbeing.
